Political footballs

Pauline Londeix

How do you connect the world of high-performance sport with considerable financial and geopolitical stakes, as well as style of competition known for their toxicity with social values pushing for inclusion and solidarity?

Whether it is a question of physical exercise - for which daily practice is recommended -, of amateur sports, of high-performance sports in which excellency is embodied by championships, world cups, Olympic games
whether we practice it or simply follow it as a passive viewer, sports take a very important place in our lives. Yet, the downward spirals we can observe at high level take us away from it and threatens the health of numerous athletes. The increasing gap between high-performance sport as it is practiced in the professional world today and our values must question us about the new possibilities available to reconnect them.
Speaking out against the dangerous aspects of high-performance sport isn't enough as solutions exist to create new possibilities. This is the goal of this essay, thanks to the example of women's football and flag football which will become an Olympic discipline in 2028, as well as some initiatives taken by amateur football.

Pauline Londeix wrote several books, on the topic of health especially, a discipline for which she has worked for several years. In 2023, she created the O2-Sport organization as a way to highlight sport initiatives championing a new code of ethics.
